LabyrinthOfLies

In 1985, twelve-year-old Paul is living in East Berlin, with his Grandmother Liese and his Uncle Henri. His parents were caught fleeing to the West and sent to prison, while Paul had to stay in a children’s home until his grandmother managed to rescue him. He makes friends with the new girl in class, Millie. When Paul and Millie visit the Pergamon Museum, clearly things are suspicious! Following the clues, the two friends find out that Uncle Henri is secretly helping the shady professor Hartwig to find the Hieroglyphic Stone, which is said to be hidden somewhere in the museum. But why is the Stasi bugging Oma Liese’s apartment? And is Millie also lying to him? Paul and Millie start open up to each other and solve the puzzle with esprit and ingenuity. Will Paul eventually be reunited with his parents?

… is actually called Milena. Being half-Cuban, with dark curls and a darker skin color, she stands out in the GDR. Millie is lively, straightforward and funny. He likes to climb up onto Millie’s shoulder or sleep in the folds of her sweater, where he can quickly vanish out of sight.
He may be Millis side kick, but he is not a cartoony character. He is just a normal animal.

  • Grandma Liese

… is a tall, strong woman with a deep voice. She can be really resolute and rather tough, but she also has a sense of humor – a true Berliner, born and bred – and she loves her grandson deeply. Uncle Henri is a slightly peculiar guy and a history nerd who loves to daydream about the distant past. His independent thinking has got him into trouble with the state on several occasions.
