Meet Lady Grace Cavendish, not just any teen but the world’s first teen girl spy, navigating the dangerous waters of royal politics while dodging assassination attempts on her beloved Queen.
Orphaned but fearless, Grace has spent her youth outwitting palace guards, avoiding the responsibilities of being a lady-in-waiting, and, most importantly, finessing the fine art of swiping jam tarts. When Queen Elizabeth I, her godmother, asks Grace to be her eyes and ears at court – without telling shadowy spymaster Lord Walsingham – Grace’s life transforms from hijinks to high-stakes intrigue.
With her loyal friends – the savvy servant Ellie and the dazzling performer Masou – at her side, Grace has to deal with the tribulations of being a teenage girl at the court of England while investigating perilous mysteries.

Grace is a truly modern heroine who completely rips up the Tudor rulebook. She moves through the palace like quicksilver, making friends, finding clues, and uncovering mysteries wherever she goes. Grace has no respect for the pomposity and social hierarchy of court life; her best friends are a lowly servant and an actor, so what?! She loves them and they love her. Grace takes her mission to protect the Queen very very seriously, but she is also absolutely dedicated to the art of having fun.
The star of the court’s in-house troupe of players, Masou is a born performer with a seemingly bottomless supply of practical jokes and magic tricks. This kid lives for the limelight and will do anything for a round of applause. With a large and supportive family cheering him on from the wings, this bright spark’s self-confidence could spill over into self-importance – but luckily he always has Grace and Ellie on hand to stop him getting too big for his shiny boots.
A hard-working servant at court and best friend to Grace. Ellie is always on hand with a bit of life philosophy. She has a growing collection of lucky charms which she has to carry at all times to protect her friends. She is worried about losing her best friend to her new duties at court, but she will come to realise that nothing can ever come between her and Grace. Whilst their friendship will be tested Ellie will learn that her and Grace are friends for life, and Ellie only has to believe it.
A superstar monarch at the centre of a Golden Age, Elizabeth is doing her best to present herself as the perfect queen and hide the flaws, doubts, and fondness for jam tarts that make her human. Grace encourages Elizabeth to rule as “herself”, finding ways to use her charm, her wit and her ability to compromise. After the death of her best friend, Grace’s mother, Elizabeth vowed to protect her, and has done everything in her power to keep her goddaughter safe.
