Ten children with hemiparesis, two famous magicians, one magic camp – and an expert medical team from the University Hospital of Munich: Magic Moves is a unique and moving combination of science and magic that asks the question: Could learning magic tricks as part of a comprehensive rehab programme help children with hemiparesis improve not just their motor skills, but also their self-confidence and independence?
The children spent two weeks at a magic camp with Germany’s most famous magician duo, the Ehrlich Brothers, and a team of 20 doctors, researchers, and therapists, who organized daily intensive therapy sessions and documented the children’s progress. At the end of the two weeks, the kids demonstrated their new-found skills to their friends and family in a spectacular and emotional show. The participants hope to inspire new therapeutic approaches to help children with hemiparesis.

The Magic Moves project offers an innovative intensive training program for arm-hand function in children with hemiparesis. It combines goal-oriented training with individually defined objectives set by the children, neurostimulation, customized magic training, and therapeutically guided group activities within a two-week intensive camp. Additionally, comprehensive scientific support focuses on arm-hand function, psychological aspects, and possible brain changes investigated through imaging techniques (MRI).
The personalized occupational therapy intervention enhances children’s motivation by teaching them magic tricks, which also strengthens their self-confidence and self-esteem. This training methodology aims to positively impact the quality of life for affected children and their families through improved abilities and psychological effects.
The children move into the castle and learn their first magic tricks, which are designed to help improve the motor skills of their paralyzed hand and achieve their everyday goals. The Ehrlich Brothers support the children in this, while also facing challenges themselves. At the end of the camp, a grand final show awaits, where the children hope to showcase their tricks. Before that, they experience exciting days, including a visit to the falconry to enhance their strength and self-confidence, as well as an emotional campfire evening with the Ehrlich Brothers.
Then the focus shifts to a confidence-building training session with professional dancer Sophie Hauenherm, who performs on major stages despite her paraplegia. She inspires the children to move confidently on stage. Jule and Leopold practice their tricks for the final show. Additionally, the children face the challenge of flying by hanging from a crane, testing their courage.
Unique magic camp with the Ehrlich Brothers: ZDF and LMU Klinikum Munich investigate in Magic Moves whether learning magic tricks can improve the motor skills of children with hemiparesis. Germany’s two most popular magicians accompany ten affected children during a two-week camp, supported by a specialized therapy team. The children can expect age-appropriate training—an emotional journey culminating in a magical finale in front of family and friends.
In Germany, up to two in 1,000 children suffer from hemiparesis, often caused by brain damage. Previous studies show that therapies can activate the brain and improve mobility. The children learn magic tricks that strengthen their self-belief. At the end of the camp, an exciting magic performance with the Ehrlich Brothers awaits.
The Ehrlich Brothers are a well-known German magician duo consisting of brothers Andreas and Chris Ehrlich. They are famous for their spectacular stage shows, in which they combine impressive illusions with modern technology and a rock concert-style performance. Their shows often feel like major concert productions, featuring lots of music, pyrotechnics, and massive effects. They are successful not only in Germany but also internationally, regularly filling large arenas.
